Production process control. Cellulose pulp (hardwood and softwood blend) is beaten to a controlled freeness (300–500 mL CSF, Canadian Standard Freeness), then formed into a wet web on a Fourdrinier or cylinder paper machine. The web is pressed and pre-dried to 50–60% solids, then impregnated with latex (styrene-butadiene or acrylic) or phenolic resin via a size press or saturation bath at a metered add-on of 10–30% by weight. Impregnation level is verified by inline gravimetric sampling every 30 minutes. The impregnated web is dried and cured in a multi-cylinder dryer at 120–160°C with zone temperature controlled within ±5°C, then calendared between polished steel rolls at 80–120°C to achieve target thickness and surface smoothness. Moisture content is controlled to 6–8% at the reel by inline moisture sensors. Thickness is monitored by inline beta gauges across the full web width.

Physical testing (per batch, AQL 2.5).
  • Thickness - micrometer, 10 points per sheet, ±0.1 mm tolerance.
  • Grammage - cut 100 mm × 100 mm specimens, 5 per sheet, weighed to ±0.1 g.
  • Moisture content - oven dry method (105°C, 2 h), target 6–8%.
  • Stiffness index - cantilever deflection tester, 50 mm × 200 mm specimen, force at 45° deflection.
  • Moisture absorption - 24 h water immersion, weight gain percentage; desorption timed to equilibrium at 23°C / 50% RH.
  • Flex resistance - repeated 90° bend tester, 30,000 cycles, inspection for delamination, fiber breakage, and stiffness loss ≤ 20%.
  • Stitch-tear strength - universal testing machine, single stitch at 5 mm from edge, 300 mm/min, ASTM D2261 modified.
  • Tensile strength - universal testing machine, 5 specimens per direction (MD/TD), ASTM D5035.
  • Density - calculated from grammage and thickness.
  • Impregnation add-on - solvent extraction or ignition loss, verified per batch.
  • Color consistency - spectrophotometer ΔE ≤ 1.5 against approved master (for colored grades).
  • Surface smoothness - Bekk smoothness tester or visual inspection against standard.

Chemical and regulatory testing. Each pulp lot is verified for fiber composition (hardwood/softwood ratio) by fiber staining and microscopic analysis. Latex/resin is verified by FTIR and solids content. Finished board is tested for formaldehyde content below 75 ppm (ISO 14184-1) - critical for paper-based footwear materials. Finished board is screened by GC-MS for REACH SVHC and ICP-OES for RoHS restricted elements. FSC-certified pulp grades are available with chain-of-custody documentation. Third-party SGS or Intertek reports are available on request.

Equipment backing production stability. The plant operates 2 paper machine lines (width up to 1.8 m), 2 latex/resin impregnation lines, 3 multi-cylinder dryers, 2 calendaring machines, 4 sheet-cutting and slitting machines, inline beta thickness gauges, and inline moisture sensors. This setup supports thickness variation below 5% CV, moisture content consistency (6–8%), and stiffness batch-to-batch variation below 10% across high-volume production.

Industrial Application Scenarios

01/

Leather dress shoes and formal footwear. Medium-stiffness paper insole board (stiffness 70–110 N, thickness 1.5–2.0 mm) is used as the insole base for leather dress shoes, Oxfords, and formal footwear. The paper board provides a rigid, flat platform for Goodyear-welted or cemented construction, and its natural/off-white color is concealed beneath the top cover. Paper board's high stitch-tear strength (≥ 90 N) ensures secure stitching to the upper and welt.

02/

Casual shoes and sneakers (cost-effective). Lower-stiffness paper board (50–80 N, thickness 1.0–1.5 mm) is used for casual shoes, canvas sneakers, and lifestyle footwear where cost is a primary factor. Paper insole board typically costs 20–40% less than nonwoven insole board, making it the standard specification for high-volume, price-sensitive casual footwear.

03/

Work boots and safety footwear. High-stiffness, high-thickness paper board (100–150 N, thickness 2.0–3.0 mm, high latex impregnation 25–30%) is used for work boots and safety shoes where insole rigidity and resistance to compression are required under heavy loading. The high latex impregnation improves water resistance and dimensional stability in wet working environments.

04/

Children's footwear. Medium-stiffness paper board (60–90 N, thickness 1.25–1.75 mm) is used for children's shoe insoles, providing a cost-effective, lightweight structural base. Paper board can be easily die-cut to small sizes and is available in custom colors for children's footwear lines.

05/

Aftermarket and orthotic insole manufacturers. Solamni supplies paper insole board to insole converters, orthotic laboratories, and private-label insole brands. The board is die-cut to standard sizes (EU 35–48), and the surface can be ground or heat-molded to custom arch contours for orthotic applications. High-stiffness grades (120–150 N) are preferred for orthotic base plates.

06/

Footwear component suppliers and private label. Paper insole board is supplied to footwear material distributors, shoe component converters, and direct-to-factory OEM accounts. Standard 1.0 m × 1.5 m sheets are optimized for nesting insole blanks, with material utilization above 85% for most size ranges.

FAQ

1 8

Q: How does paper (cellulose) insole board compare to nonwoven insole board in cost, stiffness, and moisture performance?

A:Paper insole board offers 20–40% lower material cost than nonwoven insole board, making it the standard for cost-sensitive casual, children's, and dress footwear. In stiffness, paper board can achieve comparable or higher rigidity (50–150 N) at a given thickness, due to the dense cellulose fiber structure. However, paper board has significantly higher moisture absorption (15–30% vs. ≤ 8% for nonwoven) and is more susceptible to warping and softening in high-humidity environments or when the shoe is exposed to water. Paper board also has lower flex cycle life (≥ 30,000 vs. ≥ 50,000 for nonwoven) due to fiber fatigue under repeated bending. For footwear exported to tropical markets or intended for outdoor/wet use, nonwoven insole board is recommended. For indoor, dry-environment, and cost-sensitive footwear, paper board provides adequate performance at lower cost. High latex impregnation (25–30%) can reduce paper board's moisture absorption to 10–15% and improve dimensional stability, narrowing the performance gap with nonwoven.

Q: What prevents delamination between the fiber board and EVA layer during flexing and moisture exposure?

A: Latex or resin impregnation (10–30% add-on by weight) binds the cellulose fibers together, improving water resistance, dimensional stability, stiffness, and flex durability. Low impregnation (10–15%) produces a board with lower cost, higher moisture absorption (25–30%), and lower flex life - suitable for disposable or low-cost footwear. Medium impregnation (15–22%) is the standard general-purpose grade, balancing cost with moisture absorption (18–22%) and adequate flex durability. High impregnation (22–30%) produces a board with improved water resistance (absorption 10–15%), higher stiffness, and better flex life - recommended for work boots, outdoor footwear, and tropical-market exports. Resin (phenolic) impregnation produces a stiffer, more water-resistant board than latex but is more brittle and less flexible; latex (styrene-butadiene or acrylic) impregnation offers better flexibility and is preferred for most footwear applications. Impregnation level is customizable with a 1,000 kg minimum for non-standard grades. We provide a property-to-application recommendation sheet with every sample order.

Q:What is the die-cutting yield, custom size option, and minimum order for paper insole board?

A: Standard 1.0 m × 1.5 m sheets yield 85–90% material utilization when nesting insole blanks for EU 38–46 sizes. Custom sheet sizes (e.g., 0.8 m × 1.2 m, 1.2 m × 1.8 m) can improve yield by 3–7% for specific size ranges or small children's sizes but require a 1,000 kg minimum. Roll form (width 1.0–1.5 m, length 100–300 m) is available for automated die-cutting lines with a 1,000 kg MOQ. Standard natural/off-white paper board has a 500 kg MOQ and ships in 7–10 days. Custom colors (black, gray, Pantone), stiffness grades outside the standard 50–150 N range, or FSC-certified pulp require 1,000 kg MOQ and 15–20 day lead time. Colored grades may have slightly higher cost (5–10%) due to pigment addition.
